In the Spotlight
A promising debut from an NC-based author, which I love to see as someone from here. I'm a big fan of True Detective, particularly season 1, and the dynamic between Jimmy and Micky could make for a great TV show. The character development in general is strong. Everyone serves a purpose or functions as a means to an end. Speaking of endings... I genuinely did not see this one coming. I'm the type of person who guesses the way a movie or book will finish mid-way through, usually, and am a huge fan of thriller novels by writers like Sandford and John Grisham, so I know a good twist when I see one. Looking forward to the next book.

Loved this book. It had the right mix of everything to keep you guessing and turning the page. The characters are simple but complex and the dialogue between them is spot on. This author made it easy to get caught up in the story-line, visualize the characters, and connect in a way that includes suspense, action, humor, empathy, disdain, surprise, and even a little romance. If this is the author's freshman novel, I can't wait to see what comes next!

I really enjoyed Cold Moon Rising by Michael Sledge. The story pulls you straight into the action and is very easy to follow. The writing style is clear and visual, and I could easily imagine the scenes as they unfolded. What begins as a small illegal operation quickly develops into a much larger and darker situation involving crime, betrayal and unexpected twists. The characters all bring different personalities to the story, and the tension builds well toward the end. Overall, it’s an engaging and fast-paced crime thriller that kept me interested throughout. I’m looking forward to seeing where the next books in the story go.

Michael Sledge grew up in Virginia before attending college and settling in North Carolina. Over a distinguished career as a licensed CPA and chief financial officer, he built deep expertise in financial leadership, entrepreneurial ventures, and clinical research. But a lifelong passion for crime fiction — the gritty puzzle, the psychological nuance — never left him. Cold Moon Rising is the first novel in the Quinn series, introducing readers to Jimmy Quinn, a sharp, witty detective whose dysfunctional family upbringing has shaped who he is and how he thinks. The second book, The Ones We Love, will take Jimmy and his detective partner Micky Bondurant down even darker and more twisted paths in pursuit of an unhinged murderer.
